WESTERN DRESSAGE

Western Dressage is defined as using classical dressage concepts and principles to train and develop the western rider and horse. The goal, specifically, is to develop cadence, balance, relaxation and the acceptance of the aids through the tried and true methods of classical dressage. When we combine Western Horsemanship principles and Classical training to ride our horses, we develop a well rounded and balanced partnership.

DRESSAGE

This sport involves the execution of precise movements by a horse in response to barely perceptible signals from its rider. Particularly important are the animal’s pace and bearing in performing walks, trots, canters, and more specialized maneuvers. Training is divided into the elementary campagne and the advanced haute école. Dressage competitions have been included in the Olympic Games since 1912. Riders compete as individuals and in teams.

BARREL RACING

Barrel racing is a rodeo event in which a horse and rider attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time without knocking any barrels over. In collegiate and professional ranks, it is usually a women’s event, though both sexes compete at amateur and youth levels.

POLO PONIES

A polo pony is the term used for a horse used in the game of polo. They may be of any breed or combination of breeds, though many have a significant amount of Thoroughbred breeding. They are called “ponies”, but that is a reference to their agile type rather than their size; almost all are horse-sized.

WESTERN PLEASURE

Western pleasure is a western style competition at horse shows that evaluates horses on manners and suitability of the horse for a relaxed and slow but collected gait, along with calm and responsive disposition. The horse is to appear to be a “pleasure” to ride, smooth-moving and very comfortable. All breeds can be used in Western pleasure.

ENGLISH SHOWING HORSES

Although English show horses can consist of Show jumping, Dressage and Equitation, English show horses in a flat class are judged at a walk, normal trot and canter and judged on manners, Performance, attitude, quality, suitability of horse to rider, and conformation. Any breed can compete in an English show class.
